by K4SWX on Aug.15, 2010, under Severe Weather, Weather
In the heat of the afternoon we had a small cell develop NW of Lexington.. As it moved into the county it underwent rapid intensification going from a single cell storm to a multicell line before again merging into a single larger cell. The storm passed just north of my location giving me an excellent clear view of the storms southern side.. This storm had many lowerings be it scud or maybe even some short lived wall clouds.. it was pretty impressive either way.
08-14-10 Several rounds of storms
by K4SWX on Aug.14, 2010, under Severe Weather, Weather
Very active day today with many rounds of thunderstorms. Many storms developed about 2 miles south of my location and developed over into the area.. we were under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until midnight (it got canceled after the main line moved through) Winds reached 40-45 mph at times ahead of and within the main line of storms. a total of 0.98 inches of rain fell for the day as well. here are some images from the storms. 2 other great aspects of the storms was the 2 rainbows ( 1 very low one very high) and the intensely orange sunset as the main line moved away from the area at sunset.

Early Morning Storm

around 11 Pm on the 16th there wasnt much going on across the central portions of Ky.. just a small storm that developed south of the louisville area. This storm was heading to the north at around 25 mph.. no big deal…. As the night progressed this storm became a small cluster of storms which after moving north across louisville took a hard right turn and were now heading east and expanding in coverage.. Severe warnings were issued for 3 counties in the area of louisville early on… Didnt pay too much attention to this since theres a trend of smal storms have a habit of vanishing on the way here…. around 230 Am while playing a game my Wx radio alarm starts blaring at me… Severe T storm warnings get issued for Woodford Franklin Scott counties just to the west of lexington… WOW Really so i get out the gear and get to the usual shooting location within a few minutes and theres some intense lightning to the west and to the southeast where another cell developed…. The severe warnings expired and the storms rolled across the area with insane lightning and some gusty winds…
Lightning in Lexington
by K4SWX on Jul.09, 2010, under Weather
After over 10 days in a row of heat and drying conditions ( no rain at all) Finally we catch a break. A cool front was moving into the area This sparked off numerous thunderstorms across the Indiana and Ky region, Most of these stayed out of the Lexington area until after midnight when one cluster came at us from the west weakening as it approached. Lightning wasnt the best but it was giving us some crawlers and air bolts on the front side. Soon after getting within a distance for shooting lightning it died off and we got some light rain..

8:00Am this morning the remains of a powerful storm that rocked places from Illinois to Indiana made its way into east central Kentucky.. This wasnt much really looked a bit like it wanted to develop a shelf cloud but just didnt have what it took. We got a few wind gusts and about 0.30 inches of rain then it moved on out and skies cleared out… See a couple images below of the storm as it arrived…
Towers Rainbows and Multilayered Shelf Clouds
by K4SWX on Jun.16, 2010, under Lightning, Severe Weather, Weather
Busy day today, Started with strong storm developing south of Lexington and just grazing us.. Nicholasville took a beating. we got some rain and hear lots of thunder but that was about it till the towers canopy moved away some and let the sun in . at the time of day it was i did not expect a rainbow but sure enough down low there was one… a double even…
Things cooled down for a short time but soon more towers started developing around the area. we watch a pair of towers build up and rain out many times before they became 4 towers side by side eventually then became one main storm..
By this time a squall line was approaching the area from the west. many parts of the line were severe warned and there was even reports of a possible funnel cloud in louisville… As the storm drew near what came into view was a very impressive multi-layered shelf cloud.
After this passed by.. there was another severe cell to our southwest we took some photos of and got a couple decent shots but for now im really tired and ill turn in for the time being.. ill post a few other images here later this afternoon.

Dying MCS (as NWS Stated) moved into the lexington area around 8:45 Am. we ended up having 3 rounds of storms back to back up until the time of this posting the last storm is on its way out of the area.
a total of 1.02 inches of rain was measured at my station between 845 and 10am.
Storm structure was very impressive i have never quite seen clouds in such a way. and then all the lowerings and curls this thing had was just amazing to see….
